Tina: The lady with the laundry

While Winston is the room he rented above the Prole antique shop he observes a Prole lady hanging up laundry outside and singing at the same time. His thoughts wonder to the simplicity and purity of the task she is preforming influences him greatly. He starts to feel more of his constrain of freedom and thinks of future generations. How is this passage significant? and why did Orwell include it in the novel?

  1. This is an important passage in the book as it highlights more and more the importance of the proles. "The proles had stayed human. They had not become hardened inside. They had held on to the primitive emotions which he himself had to re-learn by conscious effort." (172) This quote sums up pretty well the opinion that is being brought up more and more about the proles , as we are shifting to a much positive one , increasing day after day. They are the key. But questions come up to my mind, are you allowed to switch from a party member to a prole, if so then why does 't Winston do it ? Is the division prole and party member simply a matter of what kind of family you were born into or what ?

    1. Do you agree that there is a bit more behind that? The Prole lady could symbolize the past, as well as the future. The way she sings and looks as if she has no problems in the world like people do in our society. The difference between the Proles and the Party members is underlines once again. What does the lady truly symbolize? past and present?
